Penggunaan antibiotik yang adekuat pada tata laksana kolera dapat menurunkan volume diare, menurunkan kebutuhan cairan untuk rehidrasi, dan memperpendek durasi ekskresi Vibrio cholerae. Kolera merupakan jenis diare berat yang disebabkan oleh V. cholerae, bakteri batang Gram negatif. Kolera menular melalui konsumsi makanan atau minuman yang terkontaminasi bakteri tersebut, dengan jalur transmisi utama fekal-oral.[1,2]
Kolera umum dijumpai pada area dengan infrastruktur dan sanitasi yang buruk, serta memiliki kesulitan akses ke air bersih. Meskipun sebagian besar pencegahan dan terapi kolera dewasa ini efektif untuk mengurangi transmisi, diare berat akibat kolera dapat mengakibatkan dehidrasi dan kematian. Terapi utama kolera adalah rehidrasi, baik peroral maupun intravena. Antibiotik dapat mengurangi durasi dan beratnya penyakit, sehingga menurunkan risiko penularan selanjutnya pada orang lain.[1,2]
