Minocycline topikal diduga efektif dalam tata laksana acne rosacea tipe papulopustular dengan risiko efek samping yang lebih rendah dibandingkan sediaan oral.
Acne rosacea adalah kondisi kulit kronis inflamatorik yang terutama melibatkan area sentral wajah, ditandai dengan munculnya papul eritema, lesi papulopustular, dan edema. Tata laksana acne rosacea sedang-berat dapat menggunakan sediaan topikal seperti metronidazole 0,75%, azelaic acid 20%, ivermectin 0,1%, sulfasetamid 10%, dan sulfur 5%. Doxycycline oral juga telah disetujui FDA untuk tata laksana kasus yang lebih berat. Namun, walaupun efikasinya baik, efek samping sistemik yang ditimbulkan cukup banyak.
Studi menunjukkan bahwa minocycline oral tidak inferior dibandingkan dengan doxycycline dalam tata laksana acne rosacea tipe papulopustular. Tetapi, penggunaannya dibatasi oleh efek samping serius yang bisa ditimbulkan, termasuk efek samping terhadap sistem saraf pusat. Penggunaan sediaan topikal akan dapat mengurangi paparan sistemik minocycline, sehingga diharapkan dapat menurunkan risiko efek samping serius sembari tetap menjaga konsentrasi obat adekuat di area yang terkena.[1-4]
