Mengetahui profil bakteriologi cairan efusi pleura sangat penting untuk mencapai keberhasilan cakupan terapi empiris. Diketahui bahwa mortalitas efusi pleura terkait infeksi berkisar 20–30% pada pasien dewasa dan lansia, di mana angka mortalitas ini diobservasi terus meningkat dalam beberapa dekade terakhir. Oleh karena itu, penerapan terapi yang adekuat berdasarkan profil bakteriologinya sangat diperlukan untuk mencegah mortalitas.[1-4]
Profil bakteriologi pada efusi pleura dengan infeksi telah mengalami perubahan secara signifikan. Sebelum ditemukannya antibiotik, Streptococcus pneumoniae merupakan bakteri kokus Gram positif yang sering ditemukan pada cairan efusi pleura. Namun, Streptococcus pneumoniae saat ini hanya menyumbang sekitar >11% dari kasus yang ada.[1,2]
Beberapa studi penelitian melaporkan beberapa bakteri yang sering ditemukan pada cairan pleura adalah Pneumococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp., dan Enterobacter spp. Meski demikian, profil bakteriologi pada cairan efusi pleura sangat bervariasi, dan dapat digolongkan berdasarkan usia, infeksi dari komunitas maupun nosokomial, serta patogen berdasarkan geografis.[1,3,5]
