Strategi pencegahan fraktur karena osteoporosis harus dipahami dan dilaksanakan, karena angka morbiditasnya yang semakin meningkat. Pasien yang telah terdiagnosis osteoporosis, agar tidak mengalami fraktur, dapat diberikan beberapa terapi obat yang bertujuan untuk mencegah resorpsi tulang, seperti bifosfonat, suplemen kalsium, juga vitamin D.[1-4]
Angka kejadian osteoporosis adalah sekitar 53,6 juta (54%) pada orang dewasa di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 2010. Sedangkan angka kejadian fraktur karena osteoporosis di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 2005 adalah 2 juta per tahun, dan diperkirakan akan bertambah hingga 3 juta per tahun pada tahun 2025.
Berdasarkan penelitian Perhimpunan Osteoporosis Indonesia tahun 2007, melaporkan prevalensi penderita osteoporosis pada penduduk Indonesia berusia >50 tahun adalah 32,3% pada wanita dan 28,8% pada pria. Sistem Informasi Rumah Sakit (SIRS) tahun 2010 menunjukkan morbiditas fraktur femur akibat osteoporosis adalah sekitar 200 dari 100.000 kasus pada usia 40 tahun.[1-3,11]
